Temporary Tinnitus – A Quick Guide

September 28, 2010

Temporary tinnitus is an ear condition characterized by frequent hearing of hissing, roaring, or buzzing sounds from the ears or from the head. While there isn’t any permanent cure to this condition, there are a lot of ways to improve its symptoms. Of course, these things are only possible if the cause is known. Thus, if you want to end your sufferings; continue reading this article and learn about the possible causes of your temporary tinnitus.

Temporary tinnitus may be caused by an underlying health or medical problem. It can be a symptom of severe medical problems such as tumor, aneurysm, head or neck injury, narrowing of the carotid artery, and a lot more. To find out if there’s any medical condition that’s causing your tinnitus problem, visit your doctor immediately.

While the medical cases stated previously are considered rare, your tinnitus condition may also be due to common health or medical problems. One of the main medical causes of tinnitus is high blood pressure or hypertension. It can also be caused by ear infection. The buildup of impacted or hard earwax can also be the culprit. If you suddenly hear hissing, roaring, or buzzing sounds in your ears or head even when there isn’t any external noise present, then consult with your doctor immediately. Finding out the reason behind your tinnitus does not only allow you to find ways to cure your tinnitus, it also allows you to find ways to treat the condition that’s been causing your tinnitus.

Another common cause of this condition is the aging process as when the body ages, its parts including the ears tend to deteriorate. This deterioration causes the hearing cells to deteriorate, thereby causing tinnitus. For older people, the tinnitus they experience temporarily may lead to permanent hearing loss, a common condition among old people.

Exposure to loud sounds and noises for a prolonged period of time is another major cause of temporary tinnitus. It could be loud music, machinery, gun fire, fireworks, bomb explosion, etc. Frequent exposure to these loud noises may lead to permanent tinnitus. If you think exposure to these noises is unavoidable because of work, then it is a must that you wear earplugs or other ear protection devices.

You may also be suffering from temporary tinnitus because you regularly consume drugs, pills, or medicines. Are you aware that there are many medicines, over 200 in number, that are considered to cause tinnitus? What may surprise you further is that these medicines include those you take commonly such as aspirin and antibiotics and a lot more over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Another reason behind temporary tinnitus is your overall health condition. Therefore, it is necessary to stay healthy and live a healthy lifestyle through eating healthy foods, keeping yourself stress-free, and giving yourself the sleep and rest you need. It can really be stressful to experience tinnitus; however, it is very important that you find ways on how to keep yourself calm despite this condition because stressing yourself out can only make your condition worse plus it can also predispose you to developing other health and medical problems. Again, do your best to have a healthy body. This is not only important in getting rid of your present condition but it also safeguards you from having permanent tinnitus. The very first step is to find out the culprit and the rest will certainly follow easily.

Unilateral Tinnitus – Causes and Treatments

September 27, 2010

Tinnitus may affect one or both ears. Bilateral if it affects both ears; and if it affects one, it’s called unilateral. Tinnitus could be heard of only by the affected unless it is a pulsatile type of tinnitus. A pulsatile tinnitus is when the sound could not only be heard of by the sufferer but also by a person near him. This is a rare condition though. It only has 3 percent of the total number of those having tinnitus problem. And among the 2 types of tinnitus, it is the unilateral tinnitus that is more common.

A unilateral tinnitus is also known for other names like buzzing in one ear or tinnitus in the left ear. Impacted earwax could cause a tinnitus problem. To attend to this concern have it removed by a physician. Having it removed on your own or by another person may cause further damage in the ear. Doctors have special instruments to clean and suck out this impacted earwax safely. An ear infection may cause a unilateral tinnitus. The problem with treating this condition is that some medications might be ototoxic which causes the problem. More of these drugs include anti-depressants, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, ibuprofen, anti-malarial, oral contraceptives and chemotherapy.

A severe trauma in the head may bring about a problem in the components of the middle ear. In effect of these damaged nerves is that it may send wrong data to the brain. The external sounds such as the high decibel and the constant exposure to loud sounds will damage the hair cells, causing then a unilateral tinnitus. When normal, these hair cells on the cochlea transform sound waves into electrochemical currents relaying auditory information to the brain. But if the factors damage it, it will send falls signal to the brain, thus resulting to a tinnitus.

Stress, though haven’t been directly proven to have cause tinnitus but can still be a cause of a unilateral tinnitus case. Study has shown that excessive stress may cause a chemical imbalance in the body which in turn can turn fluid levels in the inner ear to be unstable, thus resulting to a tinnitus. Diets must be taken completely. As for those who have tinnitus, avoiding salty diet and high caffeine intake, too much alcohol, too much fat, and nicotine should be eyed for. These could increase the possibility of a tinnitus case.

A simple problem may go worse if it is not treated well, just as unilateral tinnitus. This could lead to a permanent hearing loss if it is left unattended. A proper medical evaluation would be the best approach for the condition. Taking matters into our own hands, especially when we don’t know the exact cause might keep the matter worse. Proper medical evaluation will result to a proper treatment. There are so many ways of how to treat the unilateral tinnitus, as to what to treat would be the big question.

Tinnitus Retraining – Basics Guide

September 23, 2010

Tinnitus retraining is one of the most common methods of acquiring tinnitus relief. It is a form of clinical treatment that involves training the mindset of the sufferer to divert his/her attention away from the intrusive sounds of tinnitus. This is based mainly on the basis that almost all human body actions are habits made from perception.

Tinnitus retraining follows the basic concept of eliminating the adverse perceptions about the tinnitus condition in the sufferer’s mind by helping him/her become aware of what’s causing his/her condition. Through the treatment’s counseling sessions, the sufferer will be taught of different methods to lessen his/her focus on his or her present condition.

Tinnitus retraining aims to reduce the sufferer’s fear of something that does not exist, make him or her become aware of the different recovery possibilities, and inform him or her available remedies that he or she can use in case of inevitable hearing loss.

The tinnitus retraining therapist achieves the above-mentioned objectives by asking the patient to undergo sound and counseling therapy which aims to divert his/her attention to other external sounds instead of focusing on the tinnitus sounds such as hissing, buzzing, or ringing sounds in the ears. Proponents of this tinnitus treatment method based this concept on the ability of the brain to learn, relearn, and ignore whatever the mind perceived as irrelevant.

Here’s the outline of the tinnitus retraining:

1. The First Session

The first TRT session is used to check the facts about the tinnitus sufferer in order to determine the problem that led to the tinnitus condition. The first session is also used by the doctor to determine how bad the hearing problem is. The doctor also checks the patient’s tolerance to the sounds produced by tinnitus. The doctor also checks the medical history of the patient to determine if the condition is caused by medical or health conditions, including Meniere’s disease, anemia or hypertension, or any other problem such as the presence of foreign object in the ear canals of the person suffering from this condition. This is also the time when the doctor evaluates the appropriateness of tinnitus retraining as tinnitus treatment.

2. Fitting of the Tinnitus Masker

During this session, the patient will choose his or her preferred type of device that will be used to produce his white noise, one of the most important parts of the TRT method. Patients usually have two choices for tinnitus masker. The first is a hearing aid or an earphone-like device and the second is the desktop device. Moreover, the patient will also be asked to choose his or her preferred white noise as this is mainly dependent on the preference of the patient.

3. Post Treatment Analysis of TRT

This final session is the evaluation of the progress on the patient’s ability to focus more on other external sounds rather than on the tinnitus produced noise with or without the white noise produced by a tinnitus masker. As mentioned earlier, tinnitus retraining aims to lessen the stress experienced by the patient, especially because stress triggers the symptoms of tinnitus to strike. During this session, the doctor will check if the treatment method has negative effect related to the condition and will replace this with other tinnitus treatment methods.
