Tinnitus Retraining – Basics Guide

September 23, 2010

Tinnitus retraining is one of the most common methods of acquiring tinnitus relief. It is a form of clinical treatment that involves training the mindset of the sufferer to divert his/her attention away from the intrusive sounds of tinnitus. This is based mainly on the basis that almost all human body actions are habits made from perception.

Tinnitus retraining follows the basic concept of eliminating the adverse perceptions about the tinnitus condition in the sufferer’s mind by helping him/her become aware of what’s causing his/her condition. Through the treatment’s counseling sessions, the sufferer will be taught of different methods to lessen his/her focus on his or her present condition.

Tinnitus retraining aims to reduce the sufferer’s fear of something that does not exist, make him or her become aware of the different recovery possibilities, and inform him or her available remedies that he or she can use in case of inevitable hearing loss.

The tinnitus retraining therapist achieves the above-mentioned objectives by asking the patient to undergo sound and counseling therapy which aims to divert his/her attention to other external sounds instead of focusing on the tinnitus sounds such as hissing, buzzing, or ringing sounds in the ears. Proponents of this tinnitus treatment method based this concept on the ability of the brain to learn, relearn, and ignore whatever the mind perceived as irrelevant.

Here’s the outline of the tinnitus retraining:

1. The First Session

The first TRT session is used to check the facts about the tinnitus sufferer in order to determine the problem that led to the tinnitus condition. The first session is also used by the doctor to determine how bad the hearing problem is. The doctor also checks the patient’s tolerance to the sounds produced by tinnitus. The doctor also checks the medical history of the patient to determine if the condition is caused by medical or health conditions, including Meniere’s disease, anemia or hypertension, or any other problem such as the presence of foreign object in the ear canals of the person suffering from this condition. This is also the time when the doctor evaluates the appropriateness of tinnitus retraining as tinnitus treatment.

2. Fitting of the Tinnitus Masker

During this session, the patient will choose his or her preferred type of device that will be used to produce his white noise, one of the most important parts of the TRT method. Patients usually have two choices for tinnitus masker. The first is a hearing aid or an earphone-like device and the second is the desktop device. Moreover, the patient will also be asked to choose his or her preferred white noise as this is mainly dependent on the preference of the patient.

3. Post Treatment Analysis of TRT

This final session is the evaluation of the progress on the patient’s ability to focus more on other external sounds rather than on the tinnitus produced noise with or without the white noise produced by a tinnitus masker. As mentioned earlier, tinnitus retraining aims to lessen the stress experienced by the patient, especially because stress triggers the symptoms of tinnitus to strike. During this session, the doctor will check if the treatment method has negative effect related to the condition and will replace this with other tinnitus treatment methods.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy – Detailed Tips and Advice

September 10, 2010

There is a new habituation therapy designed for those who have tinnitus or ringing ears. This therapy is called as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. This treatment, which is relatively new, has 80 percent success rate in a trial mad. This therapy uses the idea that the brain can ignore noise that a person used to hear everyday. The person must be patient as this treatment may take effect within the first 18 months.

Counseling must be given to the patient. It would be explained to them how the combination of tinnitus retraining treatment and sound enrichment t could stop the negative reaction of ringing ears, thereafter, slowly ending their perception of it. A noise generator is used in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy to provide a background noise level. The goal is to offer hope to those who have ringing ears. Time and effort are essential keys to learn and implement the technique to one self.

The person undergoing the treatment must take an effort in knowing about the condition, tinnitus, and its treatment, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. He must have knowledge of how the ear works with the brain to perceive sound; knowing that through the subconscious auditory neuronal network, auditory cortex perceives sound.

This is how Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is conceptualized. A person living in a noisy area all throughout his life won’t notice his noisy surrounding lest somebody would mention it. But as for those living in a quiet subdivision, if he then is required to relocate in a noisy area, he would recognize the noise in the surrounding. This is because, a person living in a noisy area, already perceived the sound as a noise, and the brain gives no meaning to it, and so it tunes out the sound. This brain function is called Auditory Habituation. This is the concept used in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.

How will Tinnitus Retraining Therapy retrain the brain in such a way that the brain won’t have a negative reaction to ear noise or ringing ears or tinnitus to allow auditory habituation? First thing would be to listen to a constant digitally created full audio spectrum white noise, MP3, or CD. The sound level must be below of that of the ear noise. In this way, it makes the ear noise less noticeable. Aside from that, the sound causes the plasticity of the brain to increase, in this way; it does not cause an emotional response. This then allows auditory habituation.

Patients must be cooperative in the whole treatment, helping him self finish the course to achieve the treatment which is the goal of the therapy. Patients need to be prepared before starting with the procedure. Functions of the brain must be fully understood. Patience and faith must be qualities that a person who wishes to undergo the treatment bears. He must believe that Tinnitus Retraining Therapy works and overcoming it would be achieved at the end of the treatment. The entire course would take about 18 months, so he must be constant and determined to finish the treatment.
